Crated and
Tethered Veal Calves:
Wegmans admits that their only veal supplier is Marcho Farms in
Harleysville, PA. Farm Sanctuary has photographic evidence from
this veal farm that reveals a pile of dead calves, calves lying
in their own diarrhea and a stockroom filled with stacks of antibiotics
to keep the calves alive until slaughter. In a July 26, 2004 phone
conversation with Jo Natale of Wegmans, she admitted that the calves
are tethered and crated, but claimed that this intense confinement
keeps the calves healthy, as well as easier to monitor and feed.
She also said the veal calves at Marcho Farms are milk-fed, admitted
to a low rate of mortality and that Marcho Farms buys "surplus
calves from dairy growers," who are destined for either the
beef or veal industry.
In further correspondence
in 2005, yet another Wegmans representative avoided responsibility
by stating that their "meat experts have been out to the operation
many times since we began our relationship with them. We are confident
that the calves are raised with integrity and high standards."
